This study sought to answer the question of whether food production efficiency can meet global needs and is sustainable. Researchers have concluded that the gains in the production efficiency of agriculture are insufficient to meet future food demand. Footprint efficiency would have to increase by 65% for water, 85% for nitrogen, and 72% for GHG. The study also analyzed different types of diets and their impacts on resource efficiency and found that a vegetarian diet would have the highest impact.
