Our Planet, a report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provides a series of recommendations on what to do to make our cities more sustainable. There are several proposals explored within the program, such as one to make cities greener and more livable. For example, in Singapore 50 percent of the country is covered in trees. Improving air quality is a must for livability, and trees help to do that.
Another theme explored is sustainable construction, as cities such as Freiburg, Germany have done. Constructing buildings with sustainable heating and cooling systems with low carbon output for instance, can make cities more livable.
We must also consider several other factors when it comes to sustainable cities, such as impacts from climate change, biodiversity and health perspectives. Creating sustainable transport and waste management is also described within the report as being possible for wealthier and poorer cities to accomplish.
