Idea #14 | How to Reduce Your Water Consumption at Home

samara-doole-294959-webAccording to the World Bank, it is projected that by 2025, “two thirds of the global population will run short of fresh drinking water.” That means in a few short years, the world will experience a water shortage crisis unlike anything the world has seen before. While we all know the importance of doing our part to reduce our water use, it is now more important than ever before.

Although many of these strategies seem simplistic, here are the most effective behaviours that you can practise at home to significantly reduce your daily water consumption.

Take steps to reduce water consumption in the shower and bath

One person has the potential to save thousands of litres per year through conscious bathing habits. For those who prefer a bath over a shower, use caution. One bath uses a minimum of 100 litres of water. Rather than making a bath a regular habit, reduce the number that you take to help conserve water.

Showers also have the potential to use far more water than what is necessary. One of the first steps you can take to reduce your water use is to limit your time spent in the shower. As reported by SaveTheWater.org, reducing the length of your shower by four minutes can save over 113 litres (30 gallons). In addition to reducing the frequency of baths and the length of your showers, using an eco-friendly shower head can also conserve a significant amount of water.

Regularly check for water leaks

One of the most overlooked sources of unnecessary home water consumption are water leaks. While a small leak may not seem like it could waste much water, the loss of water can be significant over time. Fix leaking water heaters, toilets, dishwashers, and faucets as soon as possible to prevent further wasting of water, and to reduce the risk of mold in your home.

Collect rainwater to water your garden and plants

Rather than using fresh water for your garden and indoor and outdoor plants, start recycling rain water. Rain barrels provide a fantastic way to collect and utilise rainwater. This small change has the potential to save all or most of the water you would regularly use to water your garden. Over a few years, this can add up to thousands of litres in reduced water usage.

Conscious efforts lead to reduced water use at home

By making a conscious effort to reduce your water use at home, you have the power to save thousands upon thousands of litres of water each year. If most individuals around the globe could follow the behaviours listed above, billions of litres of water could be conserved. Rather than keeping these practises to yourself, inspire those around you to reduce their water use at home. Together, we can help avoid a major global water shortage in the years to come.
